Low Vision
What is Low Vision?
Low Vision is impaired vision with a significant reduction in visual function which is not correctable with conventional glasses, contact lenses or surgery.
What is Low Vision Rehabilitation?
This is a process a patient undergoes to maximize the use of their remaining vision.
• A vision evaluation by a Low Vision Optometrist is the first step of rehabilitation. The examination includes assessment of visual acuity, visual field status, retinoscopy, trial frame refraction, ocular health, device trials, goal identification and conferring with the patient’s primary eye doctor.
• After the initial visit, most patients will work with an Occupational Therapist who is certified in low vision rehabilitation. This training is necessary to ensure good performance and comfort with the prescribed low vision devices. Training also ensures that the patient’s goals have been addressed including reading, writing, money management, glare management, and safe, efficient performance of activities of daily living. |
How to prepare for an appointment:
You will be asked to give information about your medical and eye health including your current medications. Having this information in writing can be helpful. Consider your current frustrations in your day to day life. Make a list of your goals, being as specific as possible.
If possible, bring your current devices which can include your eyeglasses, prism glasses, magnifiers, and telescopes.
