Lighthouse offers a 3 hour Low Vision workshop once a month. Please check our news and events page for the date and time of the next Low Vision workshop.

Facts

• There are at least 80,000 adults and children residing in the Greater Orlando area living with blindness and other severe vision impairment.  Lighthouse Central Florida is the sole provider of services to this segment of the population.

• Current resources enable Lighthouse Central Florida to serve only 125 of the more than 3,000 eligible children living with blindness and other severe vision impairment in the Greater Orlando area.

• 95% of learning during the first three years of life occurs through a child’s visual senses – how do children learn when they can’t see?  Lighthouse Central Florida’s compassionate professionals teach parents how to help their children explore the world around them.

• Lighthouse Central Florida’s Early Intervention Mentors travel throughout Osceola, Orange, and Seminole Counties to work with the youngest clients and their families in their homes.

• It costs an average of $7,000 per year to provide early intervention services to one visually impaired infant or toddler; school readiness is priceless.

• Duke University recently published the results of a longitudinal health study which found that nearly half the 10,000 participating seniors developed at least one of three eye diseases:  glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. These are the three leading causes of blindness and low vision in America.

• By 2030, there will be at least 7 million people living in Central Florida and the median age will be 58; 25% of our population will be at high risk for one of these diseases.

• With professional services, there is almost nothing one CAN’T do without one’s vision.

• “The annual cost of adult vision problems in the U.S. comes to approximately $51.4 billion.”

• Current resources enable Lighthouse Central Florida to serve less than 1,000 adults each year – roughly 1% of the projected current need.

• Real Vision is not measured by acuity, but by the extent of one’s imagination and the courage to live it…
