Transition Youth Symposium

Transition students Alisha Vazquez, Jalys Ortiz, Maria Tranfaglia with Lighthouse Transition Instructor Kristin Leanza On Saturday, May 8th local high school students were invited to participate in a Youth Leadership Symposium with teens from the Lighthouse Central Florida Transition program. They participated together in a variety of activities, challenges, and initiatives that taught them about the skills and abilities of people that are blind and sight-impaired while also raising awareness of the services offered by Lighthouse Central Florida.

Early Intervention student,  Ashley, as she plays a game that helps train her to use her eyes in  unison.

Ashley is a wonderful little girl full of life and energy. She is a fast learner and has great memory retention for all she is taught. Ashley also has Moebius syndrome, a rare congenital neurological disorder that is characterized by facial paralysis and the inability to move the eyes from side to side. Because of this, she has a hard time using her eyes together. Through her training with Kerri Marczuk, a Lighthouse Central Florida Early Intervention Instructor, Ashley is being taught to complete tasks using both of her eyes in unison. CAN TOO Club Cooks up a Storm

CAN TOO Club  student Chris as he chops vegetables with instruction from one of the  Young ChefsChefs from Young Chefs Academy and our CAN TOO children washed, cleaned, cut, and diced vegetables to create homemade minestrone soup, and rolled dough to create homemade bread sticks. They then served Lighthouse’s Puttin’ on the Ritz gala planning committee a delightful afternoon treat. The soup and bread sticks were very delicious and fun was had by all!

Lighthouse Ventures into New Employment Services

Ian Thomas studying required Contract Management Support (CMS) online training material provided by the Defense Acquisitions University. Not only was Ian a student in the first CMS class, but he was the first out-of-district student Lighthouse has served.Lighthouse Central Florida is the only agency in the state offering the CMS program in cooperation with National Industries for the Blind (NIB). For many Americans, employment is the key to independence and fulfillment.
